Can we share some holiday joy with our fellow bloggers? : )

My absolute favourite thing is stuffing stockings. I wrap each and every little trinket so that it takes the recipient close to an hour to get through one of my stockings! The best is when you can find funny little things to remind you of great times together and there are alot of laughs shared.

I can't believe there are people who haven't had the joy of waking up to their own stocking but I know it's true. I meet a few every year and I make a point of stuffing one for them!

A good friend of mine is Celtic and she has her friends over to tie a ribbon on her christmas tree and make a wish. Then she burns the tree on a certain day in February and not before so that all of our wishes come true. :)

Would love to hear from the rest of you.

Sarah

Hey Islanddancer,

Thought I'd share the Canuck version of the 12 days of Christmas with you but I forgot that Bob & Doug Mckenzie (Great White North comedy show) got drunk halfway through and never finished it!! LOL Well, here's what the hosers came up with anyway, eh?

1st: Beer inna tree
2nd: 2 turtlenecks
3rd: 3 french toast
4th: 4 pounds (not kilo's!?) back bacon
5th: 5 golden toques
6th: 6 packs of 24's (more beer)
7th: 7 packs of smokes
8th: 8 comic books (you all know superman is a Canuck right?)

and that's as far as they got. LOL Merry Christmas to all!!

anewworld,
I've seen some trees with lights wrapped around the trunks only

some trees with the lights in the fronds only

and some with both trunks & fronds lit

I guess it depends on how many strings of lights they had and how agile they were...of course some people used a cherry picker to reach the fronds

I just remembered another neat lighting display I've seen a sailboat with Christmas lights strung from it's main mast.

Hey Islanddancer - are they just stringing some lights on the trunks, or are they going way up into the palm fronds?

in Hawaii at some locales Santa rides an outrigger canoe and he wears the usual red hat & coat with surf shorts & flip flops

quite a few people decorate the palm trees in their yards with lights

the islandstyle 12 days of Christmas goes like this...

12 televisions
11 missionaries
10 cans of beer
9 ukuleles
8 pounds of poi
7 shrimps a-swimming
6 hula lessons
5 big fat pigs
4 flower leis
3 dried squid
2 coconuts
1 mynah bird in one papaya tree

Palm trees get so tall that I can't imagine anyone using them to decorate for Christmas. Anyone from SoCal know of palm trees being decorated? We don't do it in NoCal.

I was really hoping more of our international members would contribute. (thanks Lu!)

Dubs, did you have any christmases in Ireland or have they all been in America?

I know we have members in Australia, they have 6 white boomers pull santa's sleigh according to the song. lol They must have an interesting christmas as I'm pretty sure spruce and pine don't grow there so do they have christmas trees?

Do californians use palm trees?

I'm just curious.

Yes Goosey, whereas christmas can be the best time of year for some, for others it can be the most dreaded. It is a well known and sad fact that the suicide rate peaks during the holidays. If only they would reach out.

That sounds wonderful Rump.

Maybe I'll come over for dinner one day and give that paper turkey a go!
I love giving homemade gifts as it seems so much more thought, time and love goes into them. One year I found some wonderful glass figures of santa, snowman, etc. Into them I layered all of the ingredients for santa cookies (looked really cool) with a tag attached with instructions and holiday wishes. There was a poem I read once to attach but darned if I could find it when I wanted it.

Hey Sarah,

My paper bags come from a natural foods co-op. They swear they are produced in an earth friendly manner and supposedly are relatively harmless. The paper bag is the original roasting bag. This is an old southern method of baking a turkey. It actually keeps the meat really moist and tender. You never have to baste it. It is a beautiful thing. I've never had an unsuccessful result. It's really hard to convince people that it works though. I can tell someone about it, and they kind of look at me as if I've lost it. Then they come over for dinner. Then I'm explaining how to do it so they can try it. That always makes me smile.

We also bake cookies for Santa. We go crazy with sugar cookies, colored frosting, and the colored sugar sprinkles. We always make those graham cracker crust cookies with condensed milk, chocolate chips, coconut, and pecans. I have no idea what they're called. I've just made them since I was about twelve. They also go on Santa's plate. We always wrap gift packages up for people who visit throughout the holidays to take home. There is always too much junk around, so we make gifts out of them.

Dont wanna put a sad spin on the holiday spirit.........but noticed there appears to be alot of loneliness, desparation and hopelessness around the Christmas season.............last night a mom threw herself and her infant off one of the highway bridges........this has happened before...........in a large metropolis, it's envitable that something like this will happen..........just wish we'd all stop being a**holes/know-it-alls...........if only for a momment to realize..........no matter how stressful our own situation...........there are others..........who just need a kind word or helping hand............sorry Sarah..........had to say it

Hey Dubs, my boy came home from kindergarden saying he'd heard there was no Santa. I told him that's when he stops delivering presents, when you stop believing in him. Never heard another word about it! lol

What a coincidence, had fried turkey last year at a friends. It was VERY crunchy. I liked it though I'd wager my arteries probably hardened a little. Never heard of the paper bag though. Would it not get soggy and turn to mush? I couldn't do it, I worked in the forest products industry, I know the chemicals that go into paper. I'll stick to the ol' fashioned roasting pan. I always treat myself to the $2 tin one so I can toss it! : )

I've heard of the donations in lieu of gifts idea before and I love it! We have a whole lot of Adopt-a-family organizations up here that provide christmas to people who can't. They were a godsend while I was a single mom going to university! I've always planned to reciprocate but so far I've only been able to stuff the shoe boxes that go overseas. That's another tradition that I do with my son so he knows how fortunate he is and others aren't. Do they have such programs in America?

Lu, it sounds like those Germans have the christmas thing down pat!
