remembering MLK...... General Larry Platt, the WOW factor
This week on American Idol, 62-year-old novelty rapper General Larry Platt upstaged all the "real" singers on the Atlanta auditions episode with his instantly viral hit, "Pants On The Ground." But Platt is not just some William Hungian TV clown angling for 15 minutes of YouTube fame. His real legacy in fact extends all the way back to the '60s, when he was a teenage crusader for the Civil Rights Movement in Georgia.
That's right: General Larry Platt isn't just a wannabe American Idol, he's a bona fide American hero. The man was even honored with his own holiday in Atlanta, Larry Platt Day, on September 4, 2001, for his "priceless and immeasurable contributions to society" and "his great energy and commitment to equality and the protection of the innocent and for his outstanding service to the Atlanta community and the citizens of Georgia."
On that fateful day, the Georgia General Assembly declared: "For the past 40 years, Larry Platt has given of himself in service to the people of the City of Atlanta, the State of Georgia, and the nation...Larry Platt merits the highest recognition for his many valuable contributions to the Civil Rights Movement and his dedication to the struggle for equality and human rights."
Platt was actually a student of Martin Luther King Jr. back in the day, which makes the timing of his sudden fame quite interesting, given that next Monday is MLK Day. In the early '60s when he was only 16 (see the 16-year-old Platt in the photograph here; he's the one on the far left), he worked with activist groups like the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee and Southern Christian Leadership Conference to fight racial segregation in the South. He was even beaten while participating in the infamous "Bloody Sunday" protest march from Selma to Montgomery in Alabama.
During that time, according to an article in USA Today about the unlikely "overnight celebrity," Platt actually got his "General" nickname from prominent civil rights leader Reverend Hosea Williams, who was impressed by his valiant efforts. The General remains a community activist to this day, working with the United Youth Adult Conference (a volunteer organization set up to find missing children in the Atlanta area) and fighting public foreclosures.
Somewhat sadly, General Larry Platt may now be forever better known as the "Pants On The Ground Guy," rather than for his years of activism. But if his American Idol fame draws more public attention to his heroic past and what he's stood for all his life, then in way his audition will be far more important and impactful than the one by whoever ends up winning American Idol this year.
Plus, admit it: "Pants On The Ground" is a darn good song. Really, every day should be Larry Platt Day.

WHATEVER IT TAKES...
it would appear that the red cross should file an injunction aqgainst the conspirators who bamboozled the rebels and the freed hostages should be returned to their previous condition or into an escrow account and gather global interest until all the litigators can figure out the patent and copyright and intellectual proprty infringement on the part of the plotters who have abused the entity known as the red cross....
GOOD GRIEF...!!! they just might send the hostages back...

Did Colombia skirt law in hostage rescue?
BOGOTA, Colombia (CNN) -- Colombian military intelligence used the Red Cross emblem in a rescue operation in which leftist guerrillas were duped into handing over 15 hostages, according to unpublished photographs and video viewed by CNN.

Photographs of the Colombian military intelligence-led team that spearheaded the rescue, shown to CNN by a confidential military source, show one man wearing a bib with the Red Cross symbol. The military source said the three photos were taken moments before the mission took off to persuade the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia rebels to release the hostages to a supposed international aid group for transport to another rebel area.
Such a use of the Red Cross emblem could constitute a "war crime" under the Geneva Conventions and international humanitarian law and could endanger humanitarian workers in the future, according to international legal expert Mark Ellis, executive director of the International Bar Association.
"It is clear that the conventions are very strict regarding use of the symbol because of what it represents: impartiality, neutrality. The fear is that any misuse of the symbol would weaken that neutrality and would weaken the [Red Cross]," Ellis said.
"If you use the emblem in a deceitful way, generally the conventions say it would be a breach. [Based on the information as explained to me,] the way that the images show the Red Cross emblem being used could be distinguished as a war crime, " he added.

CENTRAL ISLIP, New York (AP) -- A millionaire who inflicted years of abuse on two Indonesian housekeepers held as virtual slaves in her Long Island mansion was sentenced Thursday to 11 years in prison.

The victims testified that they were beaten with brooms and umbrellas, slashed with knives, and forced to climb stairs and take freezing showers as punishment. One victim was forced to eat dozens of chili peppers and then was forced to eat her own vomit when she couldn't keep the peppers down, prosecutors said.
U.S. District Judge Arthur Spatt called the testimony "eye-opening, to say the least -- that things like that go on in our country."
"In her arrogance, she treated Samirah and Enung as less than people," Assistant U.S. Attorney Demetri Jones said. "Justice for the victims, that's what the government is asking for."
Federal sentencing guidelines had recommended a range of 12 to 15 years in prison for Sabhnani, who was identified as the one who inflicted the abuse. In addition to prison, she will serve three years of probation and was fined $25,000.
"I just want to say that I love my children very much," the defendant told the court as two of her grown children looked on. "I was brought to this Earth to help people who are in need."
Mahender Sabhnani, 51, who is free on bail while awaiting his own Friday sentencing, wept as he watched his wife's punishment pronounced.
He was charged with the same crimes because he allowed the conduct to take place and benefited from the work the women performed in his home, prosecutors said. He is expected to receive a much shorter prison term.
Prosecutors contended that the accusations amounted to a "modern-day slavery" case. They said the maids were subjected to "punishment that escalated into a cruel form of torture," which ended in May 2007, when one of the women fled early on Mother's Day. She wandered into a Dunkin' Donuts wearing nothing but rags, and employees called police.
"This did not happen in the 1800s," Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Lesko said during the trial. "This happened in the 21st century. This happened in Muttontown, New York."
The women, whose relatives in Indonesia were paid about $100 a month -- the women themselves received no cash -- said they were tortured and beaten for misdeeds that included sleeping late or stealing food from trash bins because they were poorly fed. Both women also said they were forced to sleep on mats in the kitchen.
Spatt postponed a decision on the amount of back wages owed to the women. Prosecutors suggested that the women were due more than $1.1 million, but defense attorneys said the figure should be much lower.
The couple also face fines and could be forced to forfeit their home, which is valued at almost $2 million. Mahender Sabhnani ran an international perfume business out of a home office.
One of the women arrived in the Sabhnanis' Muttontown home in 2002, the second in 2005. Their passports and other travel documents were immediately confiscated by the Sabhnanis, the women testified.
The defense, which intends to appeal, contended the two women concocted the story as a way of escaping the house for more lucrative opportunities. They also argued that the housekeepers practiced witchcraft and may have abused themselves as part of a self-mutilation ritual.
Defense attorney Jeffrey Hoffman said that 175 letters were submitted to the court detailing Sabhnani's charitable acts around the world. He called her "a woman who spent a lifetime doing good deeds."
Hoffman said that around 2004 or 2005, Sabhnani's weight plummeted from 325 pounds to 135. "She did it by starving herself," and that resulted in a chemical imbalance and significant malnourishment. "She had become a very different person."
"I think it's very harsh," Hoffman said after the sentencing. "She has suffered dramatically."

ANY progress is a slow and tedious one if any at all...
if we could all snap our fingers and make it all better it would probably sound like a tanker full of reddenbutters going off all at the same time....

Forty years after interracial marriage ruling, acceptance still isn't universal

Rosalind Murray and John Port have been married 20 years and people still stare at them.
He is white. She is black.
"We still get looks, stares, the stare down," said Murray. "The stares come from both sides, not just whites. Blacks give you the stare down. It's hard to find a place where you'd be accepted."
Murray and Port, of Boynton Beach, married in 1987, 20 years after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a Virginia law that barred blacks and whites from marrying -- a ruling that allowed Americans of all races to intermarry. Marriages like theirs helped change the country.
Richard and Mildred Loving, a white man and a black woman living in Virginia, married in Washington, D.C. in 1958 after she became pregnant. They moved back to Virginia in 1963 and police arrested them.
The Lovings were prosecuted, and a judge sentenced them to one year in jail unless they agreed to leave Virginia for 25 years.
The high court's ruling 40 years ago this week struck down anti-miscegenation laws in 16 states, including Florida. It was another victory for civil rights.
In little more than a decade, blacks had won the right to integrate schools, to vote and use public accommodations, including service in restaurants, hotels and buses.
But while interracial marriages no longer face legal challenges, many couples are discriminated against or suffer social and cultural pressures, including rejection by family members, said Stanford University sociologist Michael Rosenfeld, author of The Age of Independence: Interracial Unions, and the Changing American Family.
Since the court ruled in Loving vs. Virginia in 1967, the number of interracial marriages in the United States has been on the rise: from 310,000 in 1970, to 651,000 in 1980, and 1,161,000 in 1992, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
The Lovings were not the only interracial couple testing the miscegenation laws. Their tenacity helped overcome barriers, making it easier for Americans of various racial and ethnic groups to intermarry, Rosenfeld said.
Today, almost 3 million marriages in the United States are of interracial couples, more than 7 percent of all marriages. A number of prominent Americans are the children of such marriages, among them Tiger Woods, the son of black and Asian parents.
U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, who is running for president, and actress Halle Berry also are the children of mixed marriages, as is Miami Dolphins football star Jason Taylor, whose wife is white.
Julian Bond, chairman of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has a white wife. Former Defense Secretary William Cohen and actor Robert DeNiro are married to black women.
Fewer black women marry outside their race than black males, according to the census.
Murray said getting disapproving looks from other black people is more hurtful to her than any from whites.
"You have to learn how to let things roll off your back," Murray said. "Because if you didn't, you'd be upset all the time."
Despite the growing acceptance, South Florida couples won't easily forget early resistance.
Murray and Port met on the job in Pittsburgh. She was furnishing her first house. He was looking to make his apartment comfortable. The friendship grew as they went to garage sales together.
"There was a great deal of curiosity for us," Murray said. "There was a great deal of physical attraction, too."
"My parents were fully supportive" of their marriage, said Murray. "His parents were not. They did not come to the wedding."
But they have come to accept the marriage and their 5-year-old adopted biracial son, she said.
Mary Scott Canada and Ronald Martin Woodstock celebrated their 22 years of marriage Thursday. Canada is white. Woodstock is a black Jamaican. They met when they both were students at West Virginia Wesleyan College.
Canada said when they were younger, blacks and whites would make disapproving comments or stare.
But the Fort Lauderdale couple, who have two children, don't see negative reactions today that were prevalent earlier in the marriage.
"It's not that big a deal now," said Canada. "Most people treat us very graciously."
Canada, who owns an interior decorating and painting business, and Woodstock, a high school teacher and coach, eloped.
"My parents were not in line with our attitudes," Canada said. "But they grew to love my husband."
Canada said race comes up more around children as schoolmates wonder what their ethnicity is because of the way they look.
Her 12-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter are often mistaken for being Hispanic. She calls her daughter "exotic looking" because her features reflect both parents.

There is a cliche in the English language that says....
" What's good for the goose is good for the gander. "
I've heard it said in various scenarios.. mostly social. Another way of saying it is: If it's good enough for you, then it should be good enough for me."
Got the idea.... interesting concept.... Let's take it to a whole 'nother level.... ( the male population here is gonna luv me for THIS one....lol..).
Guy & gal meet..... situation clicks, chemistry is in reaction mode, all systems are go...!
They decide to really get serious and for the most part they get engaged and she gets an engagement ring. She is 'usually' thrilled, whether it's a speck of pressurized carbon or a Klieg light that requires welder?s goggles to look at it.
Two things have just happened here:
A. anticipated wedding
B. an impenetrable force field that supposedly keeps all males in heat at bay(away). lol... hopefully...
Wassup with Mr. Engagor..... No ring..???

Ohhhh really...???
How come, for why, Mr.'I just took you off the market', doesn't have to wear a ring letting all the (ROFL) females in heat know/see that he's begotten...???

We've compromised our values, sold out our principles and used our freedoms to justify giving more power to the government. In the first century of America's life, its government was afraid of its citizens. Now, it's the other way around.
Maybe America should consider starting on the same kind of 12-step program that's helped millions of other addicts who couldn't see that they were slowly killing themselves. Here's my version of it, condensed to six steps since I know that Americans are way too lazy to stick around for all 12.
Step One: Admit we are not powerless.
Take a look at our Constitution. Not just a transcript; find an actual picture of it. The first three words, "We the People," are at least four times larger than the others. Do you think that was an accident? Of course not. Our framers chose those words, and made them that size, because they knew they were the answer to any problem we would ever face.
Step Two: Believe that a power greater than ourselves can restore us to sanity.
I think this one pretty much speaks for itself.
Step Three: Decide to take our power back.
A recent polls says 81 percent of Americans now say that our country is on the wrong track. If you're one of those people, who do you blame? The Bush administration? Congress? The media?

At the height of segregation in the United States, an unlikely alliance between a black medical genius and a white surgeon led to some of the 20th century's pioneering medical breakthroughs, chief among them the procedure that cured the heart defect that caused "blue baby syndrome."
Partners of the Heart tells the remarkable but obscure story of Vivien Thomas, whose medical collaboration with surgeon Alfred Blalock opened new paths for healing at a time when most doors were closed to African Americans.
As a young man in Nashville, Tennessee's middle-class black community, Thomas dreamed of becoming a doctor. But after the Great Depression wiped out his savings, he took a low-paying job at Vanderbilt University's medical school. He was 19 years old. His job classification was janitor, but he quickly became the trusted assistant to the temperamental, ambitious surgeon Alfred Blalock, age 32.
Despite their different backgrounds, race and status, the two men developed a congenial friendship and genuine respect for each other within the lab. At Vanderbilt, they made their first medical breakthrough: they proved that shock was caused by loss of blood and other fluids.
When Blalock's growing renown led to a job offer at Johns Hopkins as chief of surgery, he made it a condition that Thomas accompany him. In 1941, Thomas, his wife, and two young daughters moved to Baltimore. In that city and at Johns Hopkins, Thomas encountered prejudice, racism and segregation as never before. Colleagues and collaborators in the lab and the operating room, Blalock and Thomas could not eat at the same table in the hospital cafeteria.
At Hopkins, Blalock and Thomas tackled a deadly heart defect that afflicted thousands of babies each year, stunting their growth and leaving them listless and with a bluish cast to their skin. Spurred by Hopkins colleague Helen Taussig, chief of pediatric cardiology, Thomas and Blalock spent a year investigating "blue baby syndrome" and devising a surgery to correct it. As Blalock attended to his many administrative duties, Thomas did the day-to-day work in the lab to advance the project, even creating specialized surgical instruments for the exacting procedure.

After 90 minutes, Blalock began to sew up Eileen's tiny arteries. When the clamps were removed and the baby's lips blushed a bright pink, wrote Thomas, "you have never seen anything so dramatic. It was almost a miracle." Alfred Blalock and Vivien Thomas had successfully pioneered an operation that would bring fame, glory -- and hundreds of sick babies and their desperate parents -- to Hopkins. In the first year alone, the team performed more than 200 operations.
As the hospital's reputation grew, so did Thomas's responsibilities. The former carpenter with no college education directed the research laboratory, training the country's brightest young surgeons. Yet he struggled to make ends meet and moonlighted as a bartender -- often at functions attended by those he trained during the day.
When Alfred Blalock died in 1965 at age 65, Vivien Thomas fell into a depression and did not undertake a major research project for six years. Then, as Hopkins took halting steps toward desegregation, he made a new role for himself as mentor to the first generation of African American medical students, as well as hospital staff.
Entering his sixties, Thomas began to reap some richly deserved recognition for his contributions to cardiac surgery. In 1971, Blalock's former surgery students presented him with a portrait they commissioned to hang on Hopkins' walls. may not have been a disaster but one of the most eye-widening and mind boggling experiences ever...but as you will soon see and pardon my pun, one goes with the flow.
one of the free media newspapers was posting their personal ads on the internet so that makes it eligible for here.... from her description, tall, extremely pretty, blue eyed blonde, very physically conscious. sounded great.
we hit it off through the emails and then we gave good phone to each other so we decided to meet for Sunday brunch in the Hartford, CT area. date and time all set, I call her sund. morn to dbbl confirm and she tells me she has a very young child but her baby sitter ducked earlier and no fill-in available. would I mind if she brought her little girl along. chivalry reigns!!!! why not... I wrote a blog recently on here, [ you may have seen a title, with no blog attached ! ]..about the VICE PRESIDENT, DARTH VADAR..I mean.. CHENEY--However, the powers that be on here, felt that his first name resembled that of a male body part, and so an entire blog was coldly erased!!..Meanwhile, a few months back, i planted a staged blog on here,. about how you can bypass the censors, by mis- spelling naughty words!! Probably the three most topical topics(LOL)amongst people, let alone that which decimates a relationship, are:
a. Politics
b. Money $$$
c. Religion
I've been witness to a lot of blog tossing, twisting, spinning & forumphering here & about these hallways...... and one item i have NOT seen....re: RELIGION.
